5 Conversations You Need to Have When Beginning Your Encore Career
The Baby Boomer total of the population is around 73 million and about 20 million are actively participating in the workforce.
Now, there are five conversations you need to have when beginning your encore career.
It’s easy to say, but it can be very challenging. By learning these, you will get used to “selling yourself” in front of a safer crowd before you take your business public.
1. Conversation with Yourself
What do you think is possible? Find someone who is doing what you want. Does this idea really excite you? Do you want to do it for 5+ years? Think about your past successes in some detail.
2. Conversation with Your Family
They may not understand or even discourage you, but they can be big supporters during the start-up. Their questions will help you create some clarity in what you’ll be working towards or they may know someone you might connect with. Help them understand the possible ups and downs of Independent Work. Talk through with them the differences in corporate life and a company of one.
3. Conversation with Your Mentors/Peers
Who have you looked to in the past for advice and help? Some good resources you want to consider in the future include entrepreneurial groups such as SCORE. Search LinkedIn, Web searches, podcasts, YouTube and look into who might be your “Board of Directors.”
4. Conversation with Your Lawyer/Accountant
Find out the key requirements needed for the business you want to start. They can show you some early pitfalls to avoid. They may also have other clients doing similar work they can introduce you to or hire out some activities that they can do better and allow you to stick to your highest value work.
5. Conversation with Your Early Adopters
The beginnings of your customer discovery start here. Look for others you might know that have started an Encore Career. Ask former employers if they have hired consultants or people for project work. Ask for referrals or search and Scan Google, Industry New, and Job Boards for work similar to what you want to do.
