A Simple Coaching Process with Lori Glander and Rena Gainey

Having a coach can accelerate your progress in Creating Your Encore Career. While coaching and being coached is simple, it can take a lifetime to master.

What to Do When Someone Brings Up Issues To You

  • One aspect of caring is being able to help someone sort out a problem.

  • Just listen for 10 minutes and ask some questions that might help them to get more clear and find a path forward.

  • Helping people think through the problem is usually a better move – and that's essentially what coaching is.

The Simple Coaching Process

  • It's a simple process that saves you time while helping to develop others.

  • Effective leaders know how to think through issues.

  • One of the benefits of coaching is allowing people to think through their issues. But one thing missing in organizations is helping and teaching people how to think.

  • As a leader, coaching is an important skill set to transfer into your organization.

Important Things to Remember When Coaching

  • Keep on asking open-ended questions.

  • Coaching involves listening longer, and more deeply without giving direction or advice.

  • If you focus on the listening and focus long enough on the listening, people can really develop some interesting solutions.

  • Coaching involves revealing limiting perspectives that shape our thinking and action.

  • People can resolve their problems or issues or think about new possibilities if given the space and encouragement to think and talk about them.

  • As a coach, your job is to listen and not give advice – and that takes practice.

Helping people think through the problem is usually a better move – and that's essentially what coaching is about.
