#112: Navigating from Corporate to Consultant with Curt Burnett

See this content in the original post

Today, we are going to be talking with Curt Burnett. I have worked with Curt for many years and, more importantly, we have both been building our Encore Careers at about the same time.

Curt was the Enterprise Manager of Advanced Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering at John Deere for several years until he retired in November of 2016. Before retiring, however, he took up a special assignment as a Loan Executive. He spent three years starting the Quad Cities Manufacturing Innovation Hub. This opened many Encore Career doors for him.

Curt and I have many similarities but his career path has been different than mine in several ways as well. This illustrates the variety of things you might choose to do in your Encore Career.

In this episode, we discuss Curt’s path and the various things he did along the way to prepare for his Encore Career. Tune in to learn how to do the same for yourself.

We'll dive deeper into these concepts:

  • Curt’s journey in creating his Encore Career.

  • Examples of how you can prepare for an Encore Career while still working.

  • How to invest in yourself.

  • The importance of creating new networks.

  • Where to find new projects and work in your Encore Career.

  • How to change your mindset on technology.

  • The changes Curt has personally noticed as he’s shifted from a corporate career to an independent career.

  • The importance of setting and clarifying your purpose.

  • How Boomers and Millennials have different perspectives on process and structure in work.
