#56: Leadership on the Line: A Book Review

Leadership is dangerous, especially when you're leading in uncertain and difficult times. You're going to be asking people to move out of their comfort zone and move into an uncertain future. And they're probably not going to thank you for that.

Leadership is dangerous, especially when you're leading in uncertain and difficult times. You’re going to be asking people to move out of their comfort zone and move into an uncertain future. And they’re probably not going to thank you for that. So, how do you need to lead and stay alive through the danger of leading?

In today’s episode, I’m discussing some key takeaways from the book, Leadership on the Line by Marty Linsky and Ronald Heifetz. This book gets into the dangers you face as a leader and what you can do to stay alive through the dangers of leading.

We'll dive deeper into these concepts:

  • The 2 main types of challenges you face as a leader

  • The 5 responses you need to make as a leader

  • Solving brand new problems as you go through digital transformation

  • How to manage yourself as a leader

Remember, you're now a leader and not as much a manager! You have to give up some more control. Can you be okay with that knowing that people will make mistakes?

Now for some action steps:

  • Stay focused on the issue and not on the people: It’s not about judging people but helping people understand what's needed, what needs to be done next, and what their role is in the whole thing. Be willing to think about and have difficult conversations.

  • Clarity, not certainty: It's not always about pushing ahead. We can't provide certainty but we can work on clarity with people.

  • Manage your hungers: Are you genuinely concerned about the people and helping them? Or are you seeking acceptance and approval? Manage how much approval you need otherwise it may prevent you from helping move the process ahead.
