Why Positive, Organizational Change Needs to Start With You, A Conversation with Heather Honieg-Schwenneker

If you’ve recently entered a new company or department, moved into a new role within your company, or the expectations for your existing position were updated, you are probably feeling the pressure of increased responsibility.

This can feel overwhelming, but you just need to learn how to manage the change. I recently discussed this with Heather Honieg-Schwenneker on Leading the Factory Forward.

So, what do you need to consider in seasons of increased responsibility for leading change?

1. Get comfortable with change.

You can’t influence change if you are uncomfortable with it yourself. To increase your comfort level, try:

  • Reflection

  • Working with a coach

  • Regularly exposing your brain to new and different things in low-risk environments

2. Present yourself well.

Don’t present yourself as a foreign object as some firms and departments are known for defending themselves from foreign objects. Figure out if you’re in an environment like that.

If you are, find common ground with those who are in the new environment. Build relationships with them. When you present new ideas, respect their history and you will build mutual trust and respect.

3. Become a mentor for others who are leading change.

  • Help them understand the vision behind the change, then help them communicate that and how it will help everyone get to where they want to be.

  • Help them find common ground with the employees.

  • Help them find ways to present the change so that employees will support it.

  • Encourage them to not make unnecessary changes.

Follow these tips and you can (and will) become proficient in leading change.
