How to Move From Chronic Stress to Encore Career

Last week on Creating Your Encore Career, I spoke with Tony Saccardi. Tony worked at Fintech for more than 25 years as a consultant and technical director. For years, he loved his job. However, when he began falling into the trap of chronic stress, he knew he needed a change.

These days, Tony uses the tools and techniques from Emotional Intelligence and mindfulness to help people chip away at unhelpful habits. He also helps his clients peel off layer after layer of the limiting beliefs that are keeping them from being their authentic selves.

Tony’s goal is to help people find freedom from what’s holding them back and develop their own inner coach. The best possible outcome of his coaching would be his clients being set free to live a happy life with no regrets.

Tony explained how he transitioned from Fintech to his Encore Career in coaching and shared the tools and methods he used to heal from his chronic stress and burnout.

How to Heal From Chronic Stress

If you’re currently experiencing chronic stress in your job, don't let yourself fall apart. Stop before you’ve gone too far or pushed your body to exhaustion. Once you’ve healed from a mindset of pushing yourself and practicing bad habits, then you can get some clarity.

To get this clarity, you have to learn mindfulness. When Tony is in front of a group, one of the first things he focuses on is getting them to open their minds. You can start working on this by exposing yourself to new experiences and learning new things.

When Tony is working one on one with somebody, he listens to them and tries to go beyond the story to see what's behind the topic that their story is about. Once he digs deeper, he can find out what’s really going on with them and do the work from there.

If you’re trying to develop mindfulness in your life, find someone who can do this with you. Get around people who will listen to you and your story without judgment.

Another key is to be completely honest. As humans, we often lie to ourselves and to other people. This is how we end up at the end of our lives having done all the things that were expected of us but not doing the things that we really wanted to do. Start by working on being completely honest with yourself and this will transfer over to honesty with other people.

If you still want to quit your job after going through this kind of work, hire a coach to help you figure it out. Ask them what things are like in their world. If possible, go to a training session with them. Get a taste of the career you want to pursue after you quit your current job.
